God's Spirit Reveals the Truth through His Word, the Bible

You see, there are many teachers, but the one true Teacher is the Holy Spirit of God. If I give you my thinking on a matter, that is just one more view point for you to consider. But if God's Spirit speaks through a man or woman, then you can be taught by God through this person. Do you believe that God does speak through people? Have you heard Him speak to you through the Bible?

Jesus told His disciples, "I have many more things to teach you, but you cannot bear them now. But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth..." (John 16:12-13) Will the "Spirit of Truth" guide us into all truth?" Are you willing to entrust yourself to Him, to guide you into all truth?

If Christians are going in all kinds of different directions, contradicting each other and teaching things that don't agree, is the Spirit of Truth speaking through all of these teachers, or are some of these teachers speaking on their own initiative, and not from the Spirit of God? When two Christians believe opposite things about a spiritual issue, one or both are not hearing what the Spirit of Truth is teaching.

Jesus taught us, "Do not be called 'Rabbi' [Teacher], for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers." I do not want you to think of me as your "teacher." I do want you to learn how to hear the Spirit of Truth. I want Him to lead you into all truth. I also know that He can speak through a Christian brother or sister. That is my hope and goal. I want you to hear Him teach you. As you read the things on these pages, I pray that you will be taught by the Spirit of Truth. He is our only true teacher, and He teaches us through the word of God. He can also teach us by speaking through other people.

As you read here, ask God to show you whether what you read is true. But realize that the flesh rebels against God and His truth. Just the fact that you haven't read or heard something before does not mean it is false. You may believe some things that are not true, in which case the truth will contradict those teachings. When I was young, I was taught many things and believed them, and so taught others, but now I know that some of what I learned and taught was in erroe. In His mercy, God showed me that those beliefs had no support in His word, the Bible. His Spirit lead me out of falsehood, into the freedom of His truth. As the Lord Jesus said, "If you abide in My words, then you are truly disciples of Mine, and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

God's truth always agrees with God's Word. But many teach things that God's Word does not state. A major teaching built on only one verse is probably in error, and a forceful presentation does not make it right. As a matter of fact, when a person lacks sound proof from the Word of God, he is more likely to use volume or aggressiveness to try to strengthen his point. This does not come from the Spirit of Truth.

Be like the Jews from Berea in Acts 17:11. "Now these [Jews] were more noble-minded than those from Thessalonica, for they received the word [of Paul] with great eagerness, examining the scriptures daily, to see whether these things were so." They were open-minded to what Paul was telling them, but they determined whether it was from God by whether or not it agreed with the word of God. That is our desire for you, also.

I learned a number of things as a young Christian, things which were part of the group I grew up in. Many of those things were true, and some were not. Maybe there are some errors in your thinking too. Again, Jesus said, "If you abide in My words, then you are truly disciples of Mine, and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

How can we know truth? It is revealed by the Spirit of Truth.

John wrote about the Holy Spirit living inside Christians, "As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him." (I John 2:27)

The Spirit of truth will lead us into all truth. Don't fear new ideas. Instead, search the scriptures to see if they are true. The Spirit of God is your teacher. Ask Him to teach you the truth, and do not fear what men will say.
