It is easy to quickly pass over these words. But doing so will prevent us from ever getting to the life changing truth which follows. If I hold out any hope of bringing pleasure to God by my actions, I am still living life as if some Law could make me pleasing to God. This is a fact which only God's Spirit can reveal to you. It will not make sense to you, based on earthly thinking. We do better to believe Him like little children. The Spirit gives life, the flesh is of no value.
The New Testament tells us, many times, in many ways, "The just shall live by faith." Yet it goes against all the elementary principles of the world. Only our teacher, the Spirit of God, can reveal this truth to us. Elsewhere, (Philippians 3:9) Paul said, "I don't want to have any righteousness based on law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith."
When we desire no righteousness of our own, based on our obedience to law, but only the righteousness of God by faith in Christ, then that is all the righteousness we will have. It is His righteousness, not our self-righteousness. It comes from Him, not from us.
